Camstudio is free ,portable and can be used with any codec you have installed. Check it out.

I use it with ffdshow mjpeg codec and it gives almost 100% quality with good file compression.

About the FPS drop: All depends on the settings too.. you can limit the CPU to use only 1-4 cores in some programs. And also you can change the quality and so on.

What im using is Xfire.

Didn't see the need to necro this thread. (considering it's also 3 years behind in Technology, was still on a Core 2 Duo and a 3650 back then...)

I don't even remember posting this.

Personally, the screen recorder I used is one of the best recording programs. It help me save everyting on screen with high quality. With it:
1. It can help you record in a long time period, so you can explain the way to use the product as detailed as possible, making user better understand.
2. The program can record external voice, and help sync the audio with video, which makes the recordings more vivid.
3. It helps you save the recorded video to standard video format file, so you needn’t to use another video converter to edit the video.

FRAPS or Dxtory. FRAPS uses basically all the aspects of your computer, CPU, RAM, etc whereas Dxtory records based on the RPM your hard drive has, so it's more efficient than FRAPS. Although, I think FRAPS has a little better quality than Dxtory.
