EDIT (last):

Important Note: Seems that the program (ReplaceUAC.exe) behavior and the site are safe, (still not guaranteed yet though mainly in the future). Visit: MCAfee SiteAdvisor analysis: http://www.siteadvisor.com/sites/replaceua...;os_ver=5.1.3.0 ). But it crashed my PC so i think i won't use it anymore. However it's still your choice and right to install it or not (i still prefer WinGuard Pro or WinPatrol though) ;)

If you have any other experience with it, please don't hesitate to post here. Thanks alot for your input, cheers! :)

=====================================================================

ADDED: NEW ANOTHER VISTA UAC TOOL FOR XP HERE!

Updated: If you just wanted to get Vista UAC tool on Xp with the similar GUI (like Vista) and also working and safe, you can download the UAC tool for Xp here for free (100% safe, stable enough, and clean): :D
http://www.4shared.com/file/93141554/85ec6...UAC_for_Xp.html

(Full credits to Mihai Alexandru Vasiliu -jcxp)

Even you don't need to install it bcoz it's just a portable app, and the size only 413 Kb...just follow the guide (text file - included) to run it on Xp, don't worry so easy.

=====================================================================

:) Hello everybody. I just recently received an email about Smart UAC from Raymond (Credits to him):

"Smart UAC Replacement is free of all Microsoft Windows Vista UAC (User Account Control) disadvantages and presents effective and up-to-date methods of providing first class security both for Windows Vista and for earlier versions of Windows operating system (included Windows Xp!).

Smart UAC Replacement is easier and more comfortable than the standard Microsoft Windows UAC. You don’t need to answer the same questions all the time anymore. Tracking harmful and suspicious program processes allows Smart UAC Replacement to find unknown malicious programs and prevent their activity. Extensive database of more than 300 000 known threats raises your protection level even higher...please read more about Smart UAC here (Raymond's article).

Smart UAC Website : http://www.replaceuac.com/

Direct Download Link: http://www.replaceua.../ReplaceUAC.exe

That's all. I hope it can be useful to us...especially Vista users who still have "trouble" with UAC...Good luck! :P

(Again, credit to Raymond :D Thx he rocks!)

Btw, to Windows XP user, if you want a software that mimics Vista UAC (ported) on your system (yeah i know it's crap, but sometimes UAC can be useful), maybe Smart UAC is the answer. If you want to "customize" its GUI like original Vista UAC, you can do it easily by using e.g Resource Hacker/Editor to change some icons, bitmaps, and dialogs of it etc. :P

EDIT:

-I have checked ReplaceUAC to McAfee SiteAdvisor website and got This. Since SiteAdvisor has already been a "Website checker" for years, Maybe it can be our next consideration about Smart UAC??? :blink:

So confusing... just read above lol :rolleyes:

a bit curious about this software. is it spyware free and stuff? and tested?

...i just never heard of the author (not sure if he's really good or whatever), but i just don't feel like having to reinstall again.

Well, as said above, i've got the news from Raymond. I trust him while he and his blog are credible and well-known enough on net. I have installed it on both Vista and Xp, and so far so good...it's just a security app like WinGuard Pro, that detects changes (both registry and system files) on your system then reports them to you etc...and it's free

However, i agree it needs more resource though not too big...

Btw, to Windows XP user, if you want a software that mimics Vista UAC (ported) on your system (yeah i know it's crap, but sometimes UAC can be useful), maybe Smart UAC is the answer. However, it's 100% your right/choice to install it or not. If you have a bad experience, or more information about it, please share here... :) Finally, Thx alot for all your inputs! :P

Did any of you even read the Wilder's review?

I wouldn't trust that company for nothing.

It seems like this company has learnt a lot and has been trying hard to get itself excluded from the Rogue list.

The program looks good but it won't be right to believe it so soon. :unsure:

There is some strange thing with Site Advisor's rating of securitystronghold.com . It shows all downloads on the site in green, external links in green, spam level in green (zero), and the only red block there is headline which refers to http://www.spywarewa...nti-spyware.htm and tells us that the reason of listing that site in Red is that it is listed in SpywareWarrior.

However, when we go to http://www.spywarewa...nti-spyware.htm ourself, we _do_ not_ see any listing about True Sword there. Oh, there is a note that it was listed there some time ago (in 2006, if I'm not mistaken), but then was delisted as the rate of false positives reduced to the average in the industry.

So it seems that SiteAdvisor's rating is very old and they didn't visit the source they referred to during past two years.

I gived Smart UAC a try on my VMWare (with XP SP3 installed as my inner OS and Vista as my outer OS) and also viewed what the program does with tools from SysInternals like FileMon and RegMon. It seems that the program intercepts some API calls like CreateFile and checks the caller via both white/black lists and some internal database.

The logic of when it shows UAC prompt resemples the original one from Microsoft, but with ability to remember user's choices it reduces the amount of prompts significantly (I have very few programs on my VM installed, so this should be checked on the computers with a lot of programs installed as well).

I didn't try it on Vista, but from the fact that it works both on XP and on Vista I can conclude that it doesn't replace original UAC, but rather turns it off (on Vista, of course) and emulates it functions via its own interception driver.

So the idea is very interesting, the implementation is rather good... Maybe we should pay more attention to the program itself rather than to the old days of company that developed it?

Did you actually register here to act like you are a user when it is your program?

Tsk, tsk. Doesn't do much for credibility.

Tried it on XP. It's worse than UAC in vista, anything that loads into memory or modify the registry will result in a prompt. Nowhere close to replicating UAC in XP.
