In May 2007, Bill Gates revealed that his company had sold 40 million Windows Vista licenses. During his final keynote in January 2008, Gates announced that Vista sales had crossed the 100 million threshold. In April 2008, the company revealed that Windows Vista had sold over 140 million copies. Three months on, in its fourth quarter earnings report, Microsoft is claiming that another 40 million licenses have been sold (the increase is probably due to the release of SP1).

The 180 million number came along with the company's announcement that it had hit an annual revenue mark of $60 billion. Vista has been available for over 18 months, so an average of 10 million licenses sold per month is quite impressive.

Most of those are probably OEM sales...Vista is utter junk when you DIY install / upgrade it on an XP computer.

The only time Vista is good is when the computer comes with Vista pre-installed.

That is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. Upgrading, sure. DIY? Come on...

Doesn't really matter. They made enough money to cover their investment and then some.

Could have been more...

OK here’s some rough calculations:

16.14% of internet users are Vista
http://marketshare.h...t.aspx?qprid=11

1.4 billion internet users
http://www.internetw...s.com/stats.htm

Assuming the usage rate is consistent around the world…
1.4 billion * 16.14% = 226 million Vista internet users

The only way the user base would be significantly less than this number is if for some reason, Vista users surf the internet WAY MORE than all other OS's to skew the percentage up to 16.14%. I highly doubt this. And it’s probably more likely that that some Vista users don’t use the internet much because it’s for work mostly. Hence more likely there are more than 226 million Vista users.

Chances are that Vista adoption in the “rich” (and more regulated) hitslink logged nations is held back a little by the expense of Vista. So that could mean that other “poorer” (Gov’t don’t give a crap) nations have a much greater than 16.14% Vista market penetration since you can like buy it at the local fruit shop for like $1, etc.

Hey, if you include ALL of Asia? 500 million Vista users??? ;)

hehe, it's just a wild guess for kicks about Asia...from reading stuff like this...

Not sure about the accuracy. but is likely to hold some truth to it.

All you have to do it make sure everything is certified. Not so hard. I even went with 64-bit and it works great. Only problem I had was that Vista wouldn't let me install it on a computer that had 4GB RAM b/c the original install disk had a bug. But I just had to remove it to 2GB and put it back after installation. That was a pain. Maybe that happened to a some other people who tried 4GB but didn't figure it out?
