Several open source applications are available on both Linux as well as Windows. This gave Mohammed Saleh the idea of comparing the performance of various of these applications on both Ubuntu 8.04 as well as Windows XP SP3, to see which of the two performed better with certain applications. The results were rather interesting.
The tests he performed could be more or less grouped into multimedia related tests (Blender, Avidemux, etc.) and hard disk performance tests (the command line RAR utility and ClamAV). The results seem to indicate that Windows XP beats Ubuntu hands-down when it comes to multimedia related applications, and Ubuntu has the advantage in IO intensive applications.
Mohammed Saleh's Test Computer:
* CPU: AMD Athlon64 X2 5600+
* Board: MSI K9N Neo V3 nForce560
* RAM: 2GB Dual Channel DDR2-6400 (800)
* HDD (Windows XP): WD 160GB SATA150
* HDD (Ubuntu 8.04): Maxtor 160GB ATA133
* VGA: GeForce 8600GT
* I also disabled RAM swapping on both Windows XP and Ubuntu.
* Windows XP Professional SP2 with SP3 on top and all updates up to 18-05-2008
* Ubuntu 8.04 LTS (hardy heron) with all security and recommended updates up to 18-05-2008

Nice post.
So, since I use more of the IO then I should shift to Ubuntu. Problem is, I earn my living on Windows since everyone on the office uses it. Though, Fedora is on our server.
I'll be receiving my shipit CD in no time. Cannot comment just yet but to my test on Ubuntu 7.10, it is real faster than XP and yes, more (more) when compared to the other 2 modern OSes.

I don't think it's fair to compare Linux programs that have been ported to windows. Apps like GIMP require the bloated GTK framework and aren't optimized for windows at all.
He should have used (more) CLI based programs which have been written for and optimized for both the platforms specifically, and not just a raw port.

Is it because of Asus Eee PC, due to which people have started comparing Ubuntu and Windows XP on every website?

Considering that ht Eee doesn't use ubuntu, I doubt it.

I think people are comparing this operating systems because Ubuntu has all features that XP has and it is not that hard to use.
The EEE-PC had the effect that people are noticing Linux as an alternative to Windows and the most interesting thing is the performance for most users I believe.
But it should be clear that if you want to get the maximum performance with Linux you have to go into the system and tweak some things, that could be a bit challenging.

Windows XP is still alive because of ULPCs like Eee PC, and Ubuntu is also getting new userbase because of Eee PC.

Hello?
Anyone there?
Xandros is what the Asus runs!

Since when does a computer that ships with a different OS promote another? Being that Asus ships with Xandros...
Hmmm?

Yes, Asus modded Xandros with the easy Mode but I'm still wondering why they've chosen KDE for the little Device. I don't want to say that KDE is bad but it has a larger footprint as Gnome or Xfce or something. But it doesn't matter which Linux is brought to the people as long as it is Linux ^^

KDE may be easier for them to add their tabbed interface.

Ubuntu is faster but I'm still not a fan of it.
