Everybody knows and it's a fact that Windows XP performs better than Windows Vista in gaming, but after the release of Vista SP1 I had the doubt that would I have to still use XP for gaming or could I upgrade to Vista without decreasing any frame per seconds on my favorite games?

And now when XP SP3 has also been released, the said confusion has much increased again.

For removing the confusion Extremetech performed various tests with PCMark05, 3DMark06, Crysis, World in Conflict and Supreme Commander, which are here in front of you.

Synthetic Results

Vista somehow outperformed XP in PCMark05's overall score, but its important subsystem scores (CPU and Memory) were very close to the older operating system.

The PCMark main score separated the two OSes by around 1000 points—but it's really hard to see any discrepancy in any other PC-related activities.

3DMark06 was extremely close all around, with XP edging Vista out by a hair.

Game Results

It's clear that driver issues in Windows Vista have been largely ironed out, as the five to 10 percent performance drop compared to Windows XP is virtually gone. In fact, the only test out of these three in which Vista didn't match its predecessor was in the pre-SP1 World in Conflict result.

The other game tests were so close, you wouldn't know which OS you were seeing without the chart labels!

So Vista is now equal to XP in gaming.
In CPU/Memory test it outperforms XP! :D

I 75% believe on those things but for PCs released on January 2008 and newer. On older computers generally XP SP3 edges out Windows Vista.

I have an AMD 2007 based with 2GB RAM PC so I'm sticking with XP. My online games also do not work quite right with Vista.

If you have Geforce 8 or 9 series card and, play latest games then you can't think of going back to XP because of DirectX 10. It's good to note that Vista performs better in latest games.

Definitely because Microsoft won't be releasing Direct X 10 for XP. I don't know but I have an ATI card here. But I would say XP is the best when it comes to Direct X 9 based games. There are no much Direct X 10 games that I like anyway besides what I think is, if the computer user is aiming for REAL games, why won't he/she just get a console (PS3, XBOX or Wii).

One of my friends had been targeting PS3 since it can do all things. A computer (by installing Linux), player and console all in one. It seems better than having a Media Centre PC.

There is one more thing to be noted that DirectX 10 is not only for the visual enhancement, but it increases the performance also. When you run Assassin's Creed on DX10 mode, it uses less of hardware for displaying the same visual.

@Xzen

Pardon me to list some factual reasons why I think consoles are better

1. Is it not one of the reasons why Microsoft updated Directx is to make the gamers move BACK to PC?

2. Microsoft also released xBox to counter Sony's PS because the PS series are so successful.

3. Gaming companies began making 3 versions and one for the console. But now some companies are leaving the PC market since, to them, is dying (It's based from their sales). Microsoft, though, is trying to revive it by reason 1.

4. No much PC gaming accessories are on the stores when compared to console accessories.

I am not a console fan because I don't have one. Although, I am planning to have PS3.

I know PC as the gaming machine still has lots of advantages but we don't know the future. PS 3 already started it by making it a PC and at the same time a console. One of the advantages of PC is online games and well easy updates.

There's no much difference in DirectX 10 and DirectX 9.0 graphics in the current generation games :(
