I'm looking for the best free antivirus and firewall combination for Vista. I've been using avast! as my antivirus program, but it's a bit of sluggish on Vista. As firewall I've been using Windows's own and I don't think it's very good.

Any suggestions for the best free antivirus and firewall combination for Vista?

Comodo Personal Firewall + Kaspersky Anti-Virus or AVG

AVG is a big no no. ZoneAlarm and Avira Antivir.

ZoneAlarm doesn't work on Vista right now. It works! Thanks to for correcting me BinaryChaos.

Thanks dudes! I'll now download Comodo, but I'm not sure about what anti virus should I download? Somebody doesn't recommend AVG and someone does, few recommends Avira and avast! (which I already have).

Avast Home Edition + Windows XP's firewall

Windows Firewall is not Bad One anyway. The only diifrence is that will not givea ny pop ups to block/allow. But whenever a application which upload traffic executed, windows firewall will give u a notification. For eg Bitcomet.

If u can live with pop ups then comodo firewall is good solution. But the best bet is zone alarm but some problem with vista still there

rest firewalls are, execluding Outpost (Agnitum) which I havn't used yet, are baseless

Antivirus= u can search this forum for Good firewall, Antivirus and Antispyware discussions. There is a lot of threads available.

For a Change use Internet security suites but not free. The best one I felt is Kaspersky 7(KIS)

All the antivirus are go safely with Comodo and it to have a in built malware solution

Windows Vista built-in Firewall is good enough for a home user. Also Windows Defender is also sufficient as Anti-spyware. The only thing which you need is a good anti-virus program.

I'll suggest you to give a try to avast! or Avira. Both are good and free.

Nah....I thought that same thing and it actually does work! It does its job and quite well for a non-3rd party application.

ZoneAlarm not supported on Vista? I wouldn't recommend a product to anyone that doesn't support their operating system because I use vista along with zonealarm and this product very much supports vista if you go to the zonealarm website and find out for yourself. Get with the program M.Sudoku and get your information straight before you criticize.

Umm.. well, if you want a free one, get Spybot or/and adware.
BUT I don't recommend sticking with those forever, Get McAfree or something like that to protect yourself better.

Whoever says that the Windows Firewall is good enough is an ignorant person, and I urge others not to go blindly by the comments.

I suggest you take a look at the Firewall Challenge page:

As you can see from the chart, Windows' firewall level is placed right at the bottom. How can any average home user be satisfied with that?


Vishal Gupta's statement "good enough for home users" is highly unacceptable, as its primarily home users who are the most susceptible to online vulnerabilities. Power users have a good enough sense of security and corporates usually are behind a NAT and a hardware firewall. So once again, I stress that it's us home users that need the highest level of protection, if not highest, atleast semi-decent. Not downright worst.

As for a free AV solution, we don't have much of a choice unfortunately, but Avira is the only semi-decent AV out there.

My statement was for Windows Vista firewall which is in fact good enough for home users. Windows XP firewall was not sufficient and I never recommended it.
