Budget laptops like the Asus Eee PC with minimal amounts of RAM, relatively slow CPUs, and solid state storage have proven popular, and Vista wasn't designed to operate well within such hardware confines. In response, Microsoft is reportedly planning to extend the availability of Windows XP for the budget laptop category.
Originally, XP was scheduled to shuffle off this mortal coil this past January 30, but Microsoft relented last fall due to pressure from customers and resellers. Windows XP is now facing a June 30 end, which is the day Microsoft will stop selling the OS to most manufacturers and system builders. Small resellers who build PCs to order will still be able to obtain copies of XP through January 2009, which is just a few months before XP exits the mainstream support phase. Windows XP Started Edition will be available through June 2010.

nope, Linux is the best option for the EEE PC. Some people just do not want to learn a different UI to do things on a PC though.
Seems like they could have just offered WinFLP for this machine, that should have done it good.
Anyway, just install either OOo or Abiword on to the machine and there you go.

The problem is that open office sucks.

well, if you don't know what you'r talking, better shut ...
You could say that you don't like OpenOffice but that comment was nothing constructive!
But back to the topic: Well Microsoft noticed that Linux got a Threat to them, because Linux is perfect for such devices! Linux just takes a lot less ressources for the same tasks but Windows is much more spread yet. I can't understand why people are installing XP for some surfing and text editing. Why bother about a Virus when you can have it save!
Just my opinion

Yes, office 97 is much better than openoffice !!
Linux, is very limited because you cant install and play many games and other usefull apps.
I prefer use Windows 98 than any Linux operating system, in that way any Microsoft operating system is much better.
Actually i dont like Vista, but it doesnt mean that i dont prefer use Microsoft Software to do may work
bye guys.
PD: I'm a men,

Have you compared the features?

Well, you can play games, both under Linux and on the EEE! I got one and it runs Unreal Tournament, Tactical Ops and Return to Castle Wolfenstein perfectly! A friend of mine has the EEE with XP and we compared the gaming performance, it was equal, actually we couldn't see any differences in playing those games, maby a benchmark app says something different but what would a few Points in a benchmark programm bring you if you don't notice any difference!
btw: Linux is faster on that task, except it has to emulate the Windows API, then it's a little slower but who cares?
I just don't get the point why to use a 7 yeahr old unsecure OS when you can have the newest one with a lot more features (an OS isn't only a gui! most powerfull apps don't need one!)

- Yes, I have. With Office 98 i can make graphics more easiest than open office.
- Yes, same games works with that machine but not the newest!!
- Yes, I've been using ubuntu for a while, but i dont like because i dont have Internet all the time and i cant download all repository. Ubuntu team suppose that you have internet 24hrs a day!!!!!!! that's wrong.
Linux is the future, i know it but actually I prefer distribution that works with any .rpm package, like Fedora, Suse, Mandriva
Asus knows that many people love use Windows XP, because it's a mature operating system...and all drivers for XP are available on any ASUS EEPc.

Well... Windows XP has matured from its 2001 days of randomly bluescreening me. I give it credit for that. It's very customizable now as well, though things like font antialiasing (I dislike ClearType) have still yet to reach their potential. It does run fast however, and despite things like WGA and whatnot, I have to say of all the Windows OS's I've played with, I would run XP any day over any Windows OS.
However, that's Windows. Windows, despite how it seems that people tend to pick it up easy (and with its huge userbase), is not a very good choice to run on a portable laptop. It consumes too much space for the bare OS, and the applications thereafter will consume even more. I have currently Ubuntu installed and with a full set of applications (save Photoshop), I used at most 5 GB of my partition. It eats less space on an already small hard drive. Additionally, I found it to run fast even on low-end hardware, whereas Windows will require something. Even XP wants a little something before deciding to run well (and I don't anticipate Vista being on ultra-portables for a long time).

@kaironxp I like your above post. I may or may not agree with that, but this time you have placed your arguments with proper reasons. If you keep on posting like this then your welcome.

With the microsfot cutting off xp and every1 gets mad about it, just think of this, vista came out in what... 2006 i think, so its already been 1-2 years, it will be 3 years by the time xp is cut off from the public, but think about this, xp didnt have much support and crap when it came out so people stayed with Windows 98 or 2000, but by the time that 2-3 years had gone by, xp had more support and ran faster thanks to SP's and other updates. Its going to be the same way with vista and you can already see some of that shaping now, vista is getting more support and working better just altogether, now I run vista only because it came with my new computer. I didnt like vista before that but after you try it and know how to get it to run how you want it to its actually a great OS and proboly my favorite.
