I was thinking about how I use the Start Menu in Windows Vista, and I made this Photoshop mockup:
Well I've removed the Programs Shortcuts, for I don't think they're useful when you have QuickLaunch
(I'm not sure about removing the User Display Picture, I guess I'm gonna keep it )

Now the All Programs is always displayed rather than displaying the Programs Shortcuts.
The folders on the right are moved to the bottom, and now they look like the Power Buttons.
There's the Control Panel and the Explorer, that has a menu with other options like the Personal Folder, Music, and all those folders that were on the right.

The search input box was ugly before, it didn't fit right, with this concept it will.

Now the thing is that this is only an idea, and I have no idea how to make it into a software.. Does anyone have an idea how to realize this concept?
I'd appreciate any reply/opinion

There is a skinnable program named Open Menu with almost similar features. That can be skinned exactly like this.

One thing I would change in your concept is to make the rightpane in the standard start menu accesible through clicking on your tool button at the bottom. (switching from your icon view to the right pane view from the standard vista menu)

Yeah I see, I'd move the power buttons to the left, and the Control Panel and the Explorer buttons to the right, and by clicking the small arrow next to the Explorer button, the rightpane would show

Interesting. Made in VB6 (and i own a legal copy of it), is Open Source (I just grabbed the source for Open Menu +) ... I think i will have my hand at it.

Original Source credit goes to the creator of Open Menu +, of course.

I think i will try to add in Desktop Right Click menu Summon also.

If someone can come up with, and post up here, a template for the menu layout, i will try my best to modify OM+ to the specifications, and to also fork the source to a new menu project.

Ok, i guess i will need to make a new thread and ask for names for the new menu.

Hmm, no I mean the following:

Combine the explorer and config buttons in one button. If you push this button the "all programs view" is replaced by the standard vista right pane view.

So no little menu for explorer and config but a switch between the "all program" view and the standard right pane view.

If you use a dock for starting programs, you can leave it in "right pane" view to fast acces to places and config.

Here's an additional idea: Include a separate button for search, and contain the search bar in a bordered window, similar to the idea used here:
Everything else about the search bar would work the same, except it disappears when you click outside of the box.

Settings Button >> Control Panel

Shortcut Button >> Explorer shortcut, as in c:\windows\explorer.exe , that has a menu with other options for shortcuts like the Personal Folder, Music, and all those folders that were on the right.
