While it admits it’s not possible to pin down an exact number, Microsoft has let out word today that it estimates the counterfeit rate of Vista to be about half that of XP, a figure that it seems to be more than pleased with. Of course, one could interpret those numbers in slightly less positive ways, but Microsoft claims the sharp dip in piracy is due to Vista’s amped up authentication system, which it says is a “proven and effective way to combat piracy.” To come up with the numbers, Microsoft apparently relied statistics based on Windows Genuine Advantage validation failures, as well as other unspecified internal data. As TG Daily notes, all this follows Microsoft’s announcement of revised anti-piracy measures in Vista SP1 and, specifically, some big changes to the aforementioned WGA feature.

Microsoft’s statistics are based on Windows Genuine Advantage validation failures, along with other internal data.

Microsoft’s statement on counterfeit data comes as it reveals new piracy prevention plans for Vista’s first service pack. “What is changing with SP1 is the nature of the experience for those systems that are never activated or that fail validation,” said Sievert. The service pack will also help prevent users with legitimate installs from being affected by Vista pirates.

That's absolutely right. They just forgot to mention that Vista users are not even a half of XP users. If there are less people running Vista there is gotta be less people using pirated copies
I knew they were about to come up with something like this. Just few days ago they reported Vista adoption compared to XP's one and again they forgot to mention how many customers are reverting back to XP and retailers were offering Vista as the only OS option possible. Ha! what a joke! You pick: Vista or Vista...

a figure that it seems to be more than pleased with.
That's the laziest excuse they could found to keep forcing you to validate your OS almost every single day! Common! Everybody knows Microsoft don't trust their customers! It's like having a police officer knocking your door every day to make sure you are not doing anything illegal!

See it? I told you I saw it coming...

” To come up with the numbers, Microsoft apparently relied statistics based on Windows Genuine Advantage validation failures

What's that Genuine validation thing? hmmm... The application that locks you out even when you are running genuine version of the OS? Wow! Great statistics!

as well as other unspecified internal data.

Yeah that's gotta be Windows Genuine Advantage validation v2

As TG Daily notes, all this follows Microsoft’s announcement of revised anti-piracy measures in Vista SP1 and, specifically, some big changes to the aforementioned WGA feature.

Now they got me scared. That basically tells me I will have to stay on the phone for another 2 hours to re-validate my Genuine copy after SP1 release.

Microsoft’s statement on counterfeit data comes as it reveals new piracy prevention plans for Vista’s first service pack.

Shouldn't they be worry about bugs, users experience, high system consumption, incompatible software, better performance, etc. instead of being worry about Vista activation?

“What is changing with SP1 is the nature of the experience for those systems that are never activated or that fail validation,” said Sievert. The service pack will also help prevent users with legitimate installs from being affected by Vista pirates.

Will SP1 also prevent my Vista from calling Microsoft's servers every day? I remember Windows Vista locking me out of the system for one of those "home" calls. Vista pirates don't affect legitimate installs. Once a legitimate installation validates (is registered) by Microsoft it can't be used in any other PC. Or even worst you can't not even modify the hardware in which that copy has been installed! For god sake! why don't they better say it affects Microsoft's profits! At the end that's all they care about... Do you believe they are really sorry when they make you wait 1 hour on the phone to "reactivate" a product that you have already purchased, registered, re-registered and it is every day checking your copy against MS's servers? Sorry my ass!

Wrong! Cracking Vista is very easy. Even Windows Update works without any problem in the pirated copy of Vista, where as you can't update a pirated Windows XP without AutoPatcher.

Well Billy, the reason Vista is pirated half as much as XP is because there is barely half as much demand. So few people are willing to go out of their way to get Vista, even for FREE, that half as many people bother to pirate it.

Vista is good now, it is a piece of crap after SP1. Who know the update to make Vista better actually made it slower? not I, I tested the RC1, (both of them!) and found myself recovering from the first, and actually having to fully reinstall Vista from the 2nd.
June/July is gonna suck for me, when I'll have to update by force...
