Microsoft is planning to ship its next major version of Windows, known internally as "Windows 7" within roughly three years.

Like Vista, Windows 7 will ship in consumer and business versions, and in 32-bit and 64-bit versions. The company also confirmed that it is considering a subscription model to complement Windows, but did not provide specifics or a time frame.

Windows 7 was previously known by the code name Vienna.

You know the new OS should be called Windows 11.

1. Windows 1.0
2. Windows 2.0/2.1
3. Windows 3.0/3.1
4. Windows 95
5. Windows 98
6. Windows ME
7. Windows NT
8. Windows 2000
9. Windows XP
10. Windows Vista
11. Windows 7

However, it's literally Windows NT 7.0. Hence Windows 7.

EDIT: Actually - NT is the 'other' pathway of Windows. If you are counting by the 'consumer' versions, then Windows NT and 2000 would be out, leaving Windows 7 to be Windows 9.

32-bit when Microsoft said 64-bit only, hope they keep it that way!

Three years seems to be quite sufficient. Vista took seven years to be released.

Well, what do you expect? For them to sit on their collective asses?

Seriously, Even though they just released Vista, they aren't just going to sit on their asses. They will start playing with different options for their next OS.

In all honesty, I don't need that much new innovation. Finish that thing you called Longhorn, Microsoft, and I'll be looking at your OS. I enjoy innovation, but not the current direction of the product that you have shown us.

Perhaps your design may change later and hopefully do the opposite of what Vista was to Longhorn - make it more than we thought it was.
