I figure I might get an answer faster somewhere else than with Yahoo's support.

My Yahoo Messenger was fine earlier, so I'm not sure what changed, but all of a sudden I can't change my Display Image.

I hardly use my avatar and rarely choose "Don't Share a Display Image". When I tried to change my display image earlier, it wouldn't switch away from the one I had up. So I deleted that particular picture with the Delete button in the Messenger.

Since then, all I have there now is a black box. When selected, the box acts like "Don't Share a Display Image". If I try to choose one of the pics, it still doesn't change.

I've uninstalled and re-installed plenty of times. Hasn't helped. When it initially broke, I was using build 401. Upgrading to 402 and even installing 402 into a new directory on a new hard drive didn't help. I've also uninstalled and re-installed both Java and Adobe Flash. Nothing worked.

Advice?

Already tried that a few times, and Java as well just in case.

Go to folder
C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Messenger\Profiles\[your Yahoo ID]\My Icons

You'll see a list of display images saved by YM. Remember the filename of your desired image.

Now open your registry (click Start, Run.., type REGEDIT).

Trace the path
HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Yahoo/pager/profiles/[your Yahoo ID]/FriendIcons

The value of Path should reflect the filename of the current display image in your YM. Change it to reflect the filename of your desired image.

Close the registry.

Exit from YM (right click icon on bottom-right tray and exit), and reopen it.
