Part 1: Introduction
When Windows XP arrived in October 2001, it represented a truly dramatic change for most Windows users: Based on the NT kernel used by Windows 2000 and not the 16/32-bit hybrid kernel used by Windows 9x/Me, XP was internally quite different from most Windows versions then in circulation. So the upgrade path was a bit more tenuous for most users than it was for the minority running Windows 2000.

Part 2: Upgrade Advisor
Microsoft has created a wonderful new version of this tool, and I strongly recommend it to anyone thinking of making the switch. The Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor is a free download from Microsoft.com, and the initial 1.0 version (still current as of this writing) weighs in at just 6.6 MB.

Part 3: Clean Install Windows Vista
A clean install is a process by which you install Windows Vista, and only Windows Vista, on a new or existing PC. That PC could have a totally clean (i.e. empty) hard drive, or it could have an older operating system or other files. It doesn't matter: During a clean install, you will wipe out the contents of that hard drive, if there are any, in order to create a new and pristine installation of Windows Vista. When the clean install process is complete, the PC will boot only into Windows Vista, and will not offer choices for multi-booting into other operating systems.

Part 4: Dual Boot XP and Vista
The goal here is to create a PC that is configured such that you can choose between Windows XP (any version) and Windows Vista (any version) at boot time, using a text-based menu. When you make your choice, you will boot into the selected operating system. If you do not make a choice, the menu will boot into your default OS after a set period of time.
