A Microsoft security executive released data Thursday showing that, six months after shipping Windows Vista, his company has left more publicly disclosed Vista bugs unpatched than it did with Windows XP.

In total, Microsoft has patched 12 out of 27 disclosed Vista vulnerabilities in the six months after it first shipped last November. During XP's first six months, Microsoft's security team patched 36 out of 39 known bugs.

Microsoft patched 23 high-severity XP bugs during its first six months, compared with only one high-severity Vista flaw.

That's because Vista doesn't need patching - it's perfect. :)

Microsoft claims that Vista has needed fewer security patches because it is more secure than OS X and Linux.

lol that's a lie. even though microsoft does have more idiots trying to crash their systems, i still don't think it's more secure and better developed than linux. Microsoft to me is a company that doesn't move or try anything new until someone else tries and becomes successful at it. then microsoft tries to take whatever it is that's popular and try to take it to the next level. Vista is not perfect and it will never have the graphic stability of Linux without boosting a computer faster than standards.

The main reason i'm losing my windows fan boy drive is because everything i'm seeing from windows is nothing but spin-offs of things already floating around somewhere. i'm very tempted to get a mac for my next computer. I hate waiting along time for a feature I didn't think existed anywhere for Microsoft to release it. Then to find out that feature has been around for years on another OS.

Not saying Mac and Linux create every feature on there OSes, but at least it's available around the same time it's introduced to the world.

This isn't the first I've said this, but Microsoft has a lot of thinking to do and making more open source products available to compete with Linux. Linux is no longer a word of mouth only thing now. Lots of more people are finding out about it in papers, magazines and more. How long do you think Windows will conquer the PC when another OS is gaining speed in popularity and offering more for free. Soon or later we will be seeing an Microsoft Office and IE made for Linux like Mac. Companies have to soon or later make things for people by popular demand. I for one would like to see Linux beat out Windows. No one should have to pay for an OS with features already free today. Not saying Microsoft should start giving away office and other premium products for free, because it something someone should pay for. But the Operating System is a need to run a computer and that's something that should be given for free along with basic programs.

Their should be a basic pack available to people in windows and a option to get premium things if they need it. Not trial versions and forcing people to pay an arm and leg to keep it.

The Ubuntu and Novell column wasn't that necessary. We get the point!

But honestly, Vista isn't a "totally new operating system", like Mac OS X, which was based on NEXTSTEP (based on OpenStep). So it will still have security flaws.

Thats what I would like to see too. But Ubuntu has a looooong way to go before it catches up to M$. Sooner or later though I feel that M$ and Apple might be driven down the freeware path if they are to maintain a position in the computer idustry.....
