After a few months of searching and reading finally I have a solution to disable the Start menu of Windows XP and replace it with VSE’s one. The only thing is back to make a few bugfix and improve the graphics of the VSE. Keep up to date and wait until the Final Build will be released.

Update: Download ver 3.1.1.1 from here (Oct 01, 2007)

Download from here

Thanks to GeeQ

you can get the pre-release here:
http://vseproject.extra.hu/vse_pre.zip

You can get the version that supports skinning here:
http://vseproject.ex...re_skinsupp.zip

also he has added skinning functionality!!!!!!!!!!!

It’s easys to make one, since you only have to create a new folder in VSE\Skins\ directory and copy all the png images from VSE\Skins\Default\ to VSE\Skins\YourNewDir\ and edit any of the files you would like to. If you want the links to appear with white font edit the txtcolor.inf with notepad and write 1 instead of anything else, if you want them to be black colored write there 0 and save the file. Run VSE and you’ll see your newly designed Skin.

Better than ViStart?
The last time I used it, it was slow and buggy.

You can skin VStart too. Check out PNG Resourse for ViStart.

Just tested it out. This program is complete trash. Doesn't show all my program files and no changing Icons to the right of the start menu. I don't like a program that makes you have to mess with it to work correctly. Use ViStart :)

It's easy to skin ViStart as well. I've modified it alittle bit to fix the documents icon error and recent programs text and added some color skins.

i saw Vistart and it was also buggy... (Eg it leaves a border on the desktop after using it)

With VSE the only thing you need to do on your own it to copy all folder and files from All users' start menu folder to your own and after it works fine... it changes icons on the right side of the start menu by hovering the mouse on the links...

but if you prefer - use Vistart...

THRiLL KiLL - thanks for adding this one here

huh? border on desktop after using? buggy in what way? ViStart runs excellent on my PC.

Can you post a screenshot of the border (Not Photoshopped)?

Sorry, but I have to see for my self. I don't believe you and it's not cool to make up stories to make Vista Start Menu to look better.

LMAO!!! Copy all the files from "All Users" to your own? This shows how poorly the program was built. So, you are telling users to make copies of the "All Users" shortcuts and place them in their own start menu? That will be asking users to create more unneeded shortcuts that they don't need. Also, when they uninstall programs, those shortcuts wouldn't be deleted. Not Smart!

Here's my Start Menu in my "User Account" folder

LOL!!! Now, checkout the "All Users" folder

Now, who in their right mind would want to duplicate(make other copies of) that many shortcuts in their "User Account" folder that won't be deleted when a program is uninstalled and they have to manually delete it themselves?

Answer: No one!

With ViStart it automatically gets all the Start Menu shortcuts without having to go through all that trouble as well as shows the recent programs icon list. If you change your user icon and default programs, all you have to do is unload and reload ViStart. That's It!

ViStart is way better than Vista Start Menu. Sorry for calling it crap, but compared to ViStart, it looks that way.

I HIGHLY DON'T recommend this program and this is the very first program ever on this site I'm completely against users downloading and using at the stage Vista Start Menu is in now.

Use ViStart

ok, that border appears only after the first appearance of the menu - on the prev versions it stayed there- now it dissappears (can't make a screenshot cuz it dissappears fast)

anyways, you use what u want... doesn't matter. i wrote this to myself and now i published it. build a better one and after i tell you my opinion bout it in the same style u did... rite? im awaitin'

overwrite the files and don't copy them, just simply move... --> no duplication! easy, ain't it?

So, now you want to move the "All Users" program files to the "User Account"?????

That's even dumber!

Here's something more easier than that. Don't use this garbage program.

Looks like it's back to the drawing board for you buddy.

You can spend all the time you want on it, but it can still be crap. Don't publish a program that's not ready and tell users to start moving things they shouldn't be moving. Especially anything in the "All Users" folder knowing every person on that local machine uses that folder.

Moving anything out of the "All Users" folder will most likely cause problems.

Some of the people who come to this site are newbies and they will follow everything you say and have to deal with the consequences.

If a person moved those files and later deleted them and another person needed those shortcuts and neither of them were that smart with a PC, it will create a big problem. As a developer, you have to create something that won't have people dealing with these kinds of issues. You have to be able to fix issues if they come. A sorry or you shouldn't have done that as a solution to someone's problem makes you a bad developer and someone you can't trust.

If you are going to be replacing something that important, it needs to at least function just as good or better.
