Microsoft has finally put a stop to the "Longhorn Reloaded" project, an effort to continue development of an early version of Windows "Longhorn," the precursor of Windows Vista.

The programmers wanted to keep working with an early version of Longhorn, which still had features, such as WinFS, that were later cut. Of course, despite some moves to get along with the open source world, Microsoft hasn't exactly decided to make its crown jewel (even test versions of it) free for the world to modify.

Nonetheless, the group behind Longhorn Reloaded expressed dismay at Redmond's move, saying in a recent posting that it had received a cease and decist letter from Microsoft.

"It deeply saddens me that although Microsoft have known about this project for many months they only issued us with this notice a few days after we started to distribute the iso via torrents and ftp server," the project's senior administrator said in the posting, adding that any links to the code or requests for a download link posted on the site would be deleted.

You can use these longhorn based visual styles for Vista:
:bulletgreen: Aero 4074 Remix
:bulletgreen: HilledSE 1.1

I hate to say, but they had it coming... <_<

I personally tried it under Virtual PC 2007, it was very buggy. Constant crashes, very slow to boot open a program. Some processes that should be hidden appeared as command prompts (Sbctl.exe), and Explorer had to be started manually on boot. Crashed when I opened control panel or even the sidebar. It was never an official Operating System, it was really just a toy. Would have been cool if it ever reached full potential though...

Just to give an example, Ubuntu and openSUSE run better under VPC.

LHR sucks, but speaking of VPC... is there a way to add USB support?
I have a old scanner and there are no drivers for it. It have only drivers for Win95 & WinNT, now I want to see if it still works, but I can't install it, only on Win95, but VPC doesn't have USB support so... SHIT!

Neither me. It was buggy as hell. I'd instead prefer a stable Longhorn transformation pack for Vista.

Chickens. I would have stuck with it and even if M$ ACTUALLY followed through on these bogus threats, it would have been worth it to see them waste tens of thousands of dollars in legal fees.
