Not only is Windows XP Service Pack 3 alive and kicking [old news], but Microsoft also managed to leak details about what the refresh will contain.

SP3 for Windows XP is currently planned for the first half of 2008. But Microsoft initially planned to deliver the third service pack for Windows XP in 2006, only to postpone the release to 2007 and then again to 2008.

Windows XP SP3, despite its collection of delays, will make it to the market, and Microsoft plans in integrate changes to Internet Explorer and to Windows Media Player into the refresh. "Microsoft has agreed to make changes to Windows XP, two Middleware Products, and Windows Live Messenger. The Windows Live Messenger changes have been delivered in the Windows Live Messenger 8.5 beta and will be included in the public release. Changes for Internet Explorer and Windows Media Player will be made available to users in August 2007 and Microsoft is discussing with the TC the delivery mechanism for those changes. The Windows XP changes will be incorporated into Service Pack 3 for Windows XP," revealed the U.S. Justice department in its filing.

interesting reading, although it doesn't seem to affect me too much - don't use IE, WMP, or Windows Live Messenger (much).

I wonder what they could be changing with IE and WMP? Wonder if those changes will be included in Vista SP1?

Probably.
The changes they make to IE, and WMP will probably be available to download at microsoft.com.
And most likely will be compatible with Vista.

Just a guess.

XP already has something that's better than Vista. It's an operating system that works. I've installed Vista too many times and gone back to XP for better running programs and sound quality. It's OK to say Vista isn't the best OS out the gate, but hopefully it will finish the race by it's nose when SP1 comes out. If it doesn't, Microsoft better do it like a horse with a broke leg that can't race no more.

Also, I don't expect Microsoft to do much. 3rd parties are taking care of Vista to XP transitions. Look at my signature.I can style my start menu with more graphics and still keep XP running smoothly and with no drags with graphics on XP.

I hope they dont mess XP up too much like they did with Vista. XP is just how you want an OS to run currently.

[sarcasm]Yeah, it's user interface is so well-loved, it's been called Fisher-Price and Play-Dough.[/sarcasm]
Windows XP is exactly what an OS shouldn't be. It has a poor visual style and is very slow (for me at least). Why do you think I spent $20 on WindowBlinds? Why do you think I constantly use skins from alternate OS's (Vista, early Longhorn builds, Mac OS, Ubuntu)? Why do you think there are so many XP to Vista transformation packs out there? Why are there so many people who risk damaging their computer to alter Windows XP? Vista isn't Windows ME 2. XP is. (example: 2-letter name :P)
Perhaps Microsoft should have taken more time working on XP to begin with. I mean, ME was released in 2000, I think. XP was released in 2001. 1-2 years. Vista took 5 years, and has a visual style that doesn't look like it's designed for 2-year-olds by 2-year-olds.

Anyway, perhaps one of the SP3 updates will be the Protected Mode in Internet Explorer. Hopefully I can get it to install. SP2 isn't installing, so Dell is sending me a CD.

Anyway, hopefully we won't see "Vienna" for a few years. Microsoft does better when they take their time and don't rush the release.

I don't use xp anymore, so I don't care about SP3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 or 10.
IT'S A DEAD OS!
