So I am about to upgrade my laptop from 512 MB RAM (two 256 MB cards) to 1 GB (one 1 GB card). Would it be bad if I were greedy and kept one of the 256 modules in with the 1 GB? I read somewhere it's better if they matched...would keeping one 256 in there even make a significant difference? thanks

I did the same thing only I left one of the old 256 sticks in there since it wasn't user replaceable. Works fine.

It probably depends alot on what the laptop is though. You should be able to find some info in the manual or with a google search.

You can replace one by your self.
but it best to have 2 of a kind.
example: 2 X 512MB or 2 X 1GB.
To do this you can give the laptop to the near lab and have them replace your memory.

You can also check in the memory configurator here:

People use matched RAM only for the dual channel.
Laptops don't support dual channel so you are free to use anything.

Ok, I have a Dell Inspiron 600m laptop. I already ordered the correct 1 GB module which i am definitely going to install, didn't see anything in the owner's manual or anything like that about if they should match or not....

Y'know, I've been frequenting this site for a while now, and never thought the need was there to actually join. . . until now. lol You my friend couldn't be any more wrong. There are many, many laptops that support Dual Channel DDR. MacBooks come to mind for one. But I've got a gateway IBM compatible laptop, and it supports dual channel as well. So please check your information, before attempting to use said information to influence the decision of others.
