I decided that I didn't like vista rtm's shell32.dll file. Is microsoft so lazy that they can't do away with the old windows 3.1 icons? Here's a link to it shell32.dll for vista modified I replaced all the old icons in the shell32.dll, and modified a few others. I just thought I'd post it up here for anyone who wants to try it out. This is for Vista only. I also modified the imageres.dll file here Imageres.dll for vista modified. Take ownership of each of these files in system32. Rename shell32.dll shell32.dll.old and replace the new shell32.dll file in its place. do the same for imageres.dll and you will notice some nice subtle improvements to the vista interface. If vista has the ability to have nice big beautiful icons we might as well take advantage of them!

Here's a screen shot that shows how Vista looks after the shell32 update:

It's a good effort, atomicfuel, but there's some work to be done. I opened the new shell32.dll in icon editing software and did a quick comparison to the original shell32.dll. It turns out that a lot of the icon ID numbers didn't correspond with the type of icon they were supposed to display. Because of this, a lot of icons are misplaced. In the screen shot, you can see that the dialog box on the left has appropriate icons based on the context of the menus next to them, but the one on the right doesn't.
Also, just for people who don't know: imageres.dll handles a lot of visual styles that aren't necessarily icons. The one atomic posted is a heavily customized one with a different login screen style among other things. I happened to like it a lot, but I'm just giving a heads-up.
