Control panel -> Administrative tools -> Services

From here desactivate the following services:

Automatic Updates: it's better to make it manually
COM+ Event System
COM+ System Application
Computer Browser
Distributed Transaction Coordinator
Error Reporting Service
Fast User Switching: if you have one user on your pc then you can desactivate this service if no i recomand you to use only one
Help and Support
Indexing Service
Messenger: in case you use MSN messenger don't desactivate this
Net Logon
NetMeeting Remote Desktop Sharing
Network DDE
Network Location Awareness
NT LM Security Support Provider
Performance Logs and Alerts
Print Spooler: in case you use printer don't desactivate it
Remote Desktop Help Session Manager
Remote Registry
Secondary Logon
Smart Card
Smart Card Helper
SSDP Discovery Service
System Event Notification
System Restore Service: try to use diferrent backup programs instead of system restore
Task Scheduler
Terminal Services
Uninteruptable Power Supply: if you use UPS don't disable this
Upload Manager
Wireless Zero Configuration: if you use wireless don't disable it

I know more but i'm too lazy to post them now. Maybe later. Hope this will give you some work. AND!!! DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK!

Now a days when memory is not so expensive and software companies are making the user interface attractive, the best way is to speed up the computer is upgrading the RAM to 1GB or more.

Tweak :1

Example #1
You have AOL 8.0 installed on the computer. Complete the steps outlined bewlo to add the /prefetch:1 switch to AOL's Target path.
1. Right click on the AOL shortcut and select properties from the menu.
2. In the Target: Field add the /prefetch:1 switch to the very end of the path, like this: "C:\Program Files\America Online 8.0\aol.exe" /prefetch:1 and then click ok.
Now start AOL. It would load at least 50 times faster than ever before.
Example #2
1, Go to the Start button/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools
2. Right click on System Restore and select properties from the menu that appears. Add the /prefetch:1 to the Target Path entry so it looks like this %ystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe /prefetch:1 and click ok.
Now System Restore will start immediately when executed.

Tweak :2
This setting optimizes the contiguous file allocation size for the file system and can be especially useful for disk intensive applications. Open up your registry and go to:

Create a DWORD value named 'ConfigFileAllocSize' and set the value to '200' (in hex) or 512 (decimal)
Tweak 3
These Settings will fine tune your systems memory
management -at least 512MB of ram recommended
go to start\run\regedit -and then to the following key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management
1.DisablePagingExecutive -double click it and in the decimal put a 1 - this allows XP to keep data in memory now instead of paging sections of ram to harddrive yeilds faster performance.
2.LargeSystemCache- double click it and change the decimal to 1 -this allows XP Kernel to Run in memory improves system performance alot

another way is deleting norton internet security if you have it. this is one of the biggest problems at work. we tend to use Mc Afee Enterprise edition this really speeds up your system.
