Most of your questions can be answered by Apple workers. As far as making OS X as custom as Linux, might be tricky and not worth it. Just install Linux.
I'll be starting my new job soon contracting for a web development and video production company that uses a lot of Macs. I'm sure I'll then be able to answer some of your questions. Still, even when I'm working it...

No, it's more like a person tells you there's an apple on that tree and tells you how he's gonna take it.
