7 Reasons Why Google Chrome OS won't replace Windows

Here's why Chrome OS won't be replacing Windows anytime soon.

Chrome OS is a hardware platform
Chrome will have very specific platform requirements. It won’t run on machines with physical hard drives, only SSDs. Only certain Wi-Fi chipsets will be supported.

There is no Desktop!
If you've used the Chrome browser, Chrome OS will look very familiar to you. The browser window is your web interface, file explorer, and web app launcher.

Data is Stored in the Cloud
While the user can save data locally, whether it's photos, videos, etc, everything in the user's /home folder is synced to the cloud. The local copy is just a cache, presumably to allow you to use the netbook offline or where there's poor Internet.

No App Installtion
Users don't have access to the root folders of the machine. You won't be able to install applications on the OS, but there will be a plugin/extension architecture, presumably that works with extensions similar to the Chrome browser.

It is basically for Secondary Computers
Google doesn't anticipate Chrome OS being used on your desktop PCs (at least, not yet). Dual-boot will not be possible, and it won't work with your third-party peripherals that use non-standard drivers. Keyboards, mice, and USB hard drives will work, but it's extremely unlikely that you'll be able to sync your iPhone with Chrome OS.

Chrome OS Runs Web Apps Only
The only native app for Chrome OS is the browser. There's no mail application, no control panels, no application launcher outside of the browser.

Chrome is more like a TV than a Computer
It's instant-on, cold booting in about 7 seconds, and on the desktop about 3 seconds after that. This is why they're using a unique platform, so they control the hardware and software and can get performance and experience they need.
Chrome OS Virtual Machine build and source code are available for downloading.

Does Modern Warfare 2 IW.Net Contain a Trojan Virus?

It is reported on the official Infinity Ward forum that there is a Trojan virus that is spreading with everyone that are on IW.Net Modern Warfare 2.

The problem started when hackers put in a Trojan called TR/Crypt.XPACK.Gen inside Modern Warfare 2 and let IW.Net do the work of transmitting to other gamers. It has already been reported that Call of Duty: World at War is infected also. The Trojan is suppose to be some sort of keylogging software, which means copying client cd-keys or in a worst case scenario it will steal credit card information.

Here is a screenshots provided by the user Matje on IW forums:

One of the community member at Tek-9 discovered the location of the Trojan in their C:\Documents and Settings\yourusername\Local Settings\Temp and with the file names ~B8.tmp and ~B8.vir. Also, these files are created once the player host a game on IW.Net.

On the good side some users are saying the Trojan virus is a false positive, however, it just makes you wonder why would the file pop up in the first place.

Like most people here I'm using a US keyboard input. But when I use Word 2010 public beta (activated), it changes to a different (probably Canada French) keyboard. I checked by going to on screen keyboard and here's a screen of the keyboard when I'm using Word.
So how do I change it back to normal?

EDIT: Ok wtf I went to eat dinner so my laptop went into standby mode or whatever so when I logged back in, everything is fine and working.

Another month has started and we have another thread for posting our new desktop screenshots. But this time your customized desktop can win you a free license of WindowBlinds 7. So go ahead and post the screenshot of your desktop here.

In this contest three winners will be chosen on the following criterias.

You have to mention what items you have used to customize your desktop like visual style, icons, skins and apps etc.

Post your original desktop screenshot. You can use whatever you like but don't use unnecessary widgets, apps etc. just to make your desktop look better.

Only Windows desktop screenshots would be considered.
We are not anti Mac or Linux here. Actually WindowBlinds 7 only works on Windows that's why this criteria is fixed.

The result of this contest would be declared in the first week of December by me and Island Dog. If you change your desktop frequently then no problem, post it again! There is no limit for posting screenshots per user.

Guidelines for posting screenshot:
-Use a thumbnail for your desktop.
-No pornography.
-Don't quote entire pictures when asking a question or commenting, just put their name in bold and question or comment, like so:
@User name: Your question here!
You can check October's screenshots here.

Google Chrome OS Special Event on Thursday

Google Holding Chrome OS Event on Thursday. Complete Overview And Launch Plans To Be Revealed.

Google is planning to hold a special Chrome OS event at its headquarters in Mountain View, CA this Thursday morning, we’ve just been notified. The plan is to give some technical background information as well as show off some demos, we’re told. More notably, they will be giving a “complete overview” of the new OS, which they say will launch next year.

Sundar Pichai, Google’s VP of Product Management and Matthew Papakipos, Google Engineering Director for Google Chrome OS will be speaking at the event. And there will be a Q&A session afterwards.

As we reported a few days ago, Google had been planning to release at least part of Chrome OS this week. That still may be the case at this event, but it looks for now that the more complete launch will in fact take place next year. And if they are holding this event now with a “complete overview,” progress is clearly being made, so you can probably expect that launch to be early next year.

Google first announced Chrome OS in July, but gave very few details about it. It seemed the idea there was more to drop a nuclear bomb on Microsoft, which was just about to announce its online free version of Office. In the subsequent months, interest has remained high for Chrome OS, but about all we’ve seen is what the OS’s browser may look like.

How much would my computer sell for?

I plan on getting a laptop fairly soon, and want to get rid of my desktop. It's a Dell Dimension 9100 (a few years old). Specs:

I also have 19" and 17" screens I could sell. I also plan on formatting the hard drive and selling it with no OS installed. I'm wondering how much people will pay for a computer like this here in Australia. Thanks

EDIT: Also have a brand new Microsoft mouse/keyboard set worth $130 that I could sell with it, and it has a wireless network card in it.

Microsoft: Windows 7 GUI is not borrowed from Mac OS X

Before media could portray Windows 7 GUI (graphical user interface) to be inspired with Mac OSX look and feel as a confirmed fact, Microsoft has issued a statement for defending itself. It all started with an interview of Simon Aldou, Microsoft's partner group manager, conducted by PCR.

Here below is the statement of Microsoft:

"An inaccurate quote has been floating around the Internet today about the design origins of Windows 7 and whether its look and feel was “borrowed” from Mac OS X. Unfortunately this came from a Microsoft employee who was not involved in any aspect of designing Windows 7. I hate to say this about one of our own, but his comments were inaccurate and uninformed. If you’re interested in learning more about the design of Windows 7, I suggest reading this AP story with Julie Larson-Green as well as these WSJ (membership required) and Fast Company articles. And here is one of many blog posts on the E7 blog discussing the design process of Windows 7."

I want to ask from WinMatrixians, what do they think about this GUI inspiration thing. Please vote and post your comments.
