My mum has used windows xp since it was first released 11 years ago. She skipped vista, skipped windows 7 and now thinks its time to upgrade due to our printer driver not being fully compatible with windows xp. So what's the latest version of windows now? Windows 8 and should she upgrade? Well... I decided to give her a test drive of windows 8 running on my own computer and lets just say she may be abandoning computers forever.

Below is a video of her test driving windows 8 on my computer while I give her a bunch of general tasks to perform:

Tasks Given:
- Log in (Already told how to log in)
- Check your emails without using an internet browser
- Get out of mail back to the apps screen
- Check the weather
- Make, save then open a text file
- Download and Install firefox

She hated windows 8 so I decided to show her a totally different operating system all together: Ubuntu 12.10. Strangely enough she liked it much better than windows 8 and found it much easier to use. This just goes to show that loyal windows users may find windows 8 harder to use than a non-microsoft operating system. Here's a video of her Ubuntu experience:

Tasks Given:
- Change your desktop background
- Visit the gmail website
- Write and save a text document
- Quit Firefox
- Calculate 680 x 45 =
- Find where your downloaded applications are stored
- Turn off your computer

But I wasn't done yet because she had still said some very offensive things about windows 8... She called it "Cartoonish", "Childish" and "Like the first version of Windows as if every version ever released has been an improvement on windows 8". Well, I decided to put her theory to the test and actually get her to try out the first version of Microsoft Windows "Windows 1.0" released in 1985. Lets just say... She partially took back what she said about windows 8 wink.gif Here's the video of Windows 1.01:

Tasks Given:
- What time is it?
- Write and save a text document.
- Have 3 programs running at once.
- Have the clock running along with your other programs.
- Turn of your computer.

For those who can't watch the videos here are some quotes from her windows 8 video:

The mail application:
Me: Try and check your emails without using an internet browser. So no firefox, no Chrome.
Mum: Mail, Probably.
*Clicks Mail App*
Me: There's your emails.
Mum: Ok Good, Now get out of it.
Me: How do you do that?
Mum: Um...
*Angrily clicks around the screen for a minute trying to quit the appication but instead deletes an email.
Mum: How do you get out of this thing? Do you roll something? Oh this is rediculous! Cnrl, alt delete? I don't know how to get out of it... what are you supposed to do?
Me: So this is what a computer user would do (holding back a laugh)
Mum: I don't know, I would just cnrl, alt delete. There's no options, its lost its options. What do you do?
Me: Try and put your cursor to the corner of a screen.
*Puts cursor to the top right corner of the screen, side bar with 5 buttons appears*
Me: What do you notice? What's there?
Mum: Symbols. I don't know what those symbols are. It looks like hieroglyphics.

Review of the new start/grid screen:
Mum: This looks cartoonish. It doesn't even look like an improvement on the last one. It looks like its going back to the start.
Me: What year does it look like?
Mum: It looks like the first one ever and all the others (operating systems) have been and improvement on this (windows 8).

Don't know how to download firefox:
Me: Seriously you don't know how to download a program?
Mum: But I've already got it on my computer. Why would I want to download it?
Me: Because you install Windows 8 on your computer on and you don't have Firefox.
Mum: I would never be stupid as to install windows 8 on my computer. After looking at it now its just stupidity.
Me: Well try and get it, Firefox.
Mum: But I don't want to! I want to walk back to my room and have my own computer.

So, Want to update your computer to windows 8?:
Me: If they said we're gonna install it on your computer. If you don't have it installed you've got to pay a fine of $100. Would you pay the $100?
Mum: Pay the fine of 100 Dollars. I've had enough of it.
Me: And How much do you think they are saying that it costs to buy windows 8?
Mum: They should pay people for it.

What's the Best operating system:
Me: So what operating system do you prefer to use?
Mum: The one I'm used to.
Me: Well what is that?
Mum: Windows 7, That will do.
Me: You don't even use windows 7
Mum: What do I use?
Me: *Laughs* Seriously you should know what you use!
Mum: Vista
Me: You don't, You hate vista.
Mum: Well what do I use then?
Me: The thing before vista.
Mum: XP
Me: Yes XP
Mum: Well that's fine, just stay with the XP.
Me: 2001
Mum: It doesn't matter. I'm used to it. I know what to do and thats it!
*slams the door on windows 8*

LMAO, the best Windows 8 related video I have ever seen!

Lol, glad you have given that title to my video... I got the inspiration to make it after seeing a video from Chris pirillo of his dad trying out windows 8 that had over a million views.

Me: So what operating system do you prefer to use?
Mum: The one I'm used to.
Me: Well what is that?
Mum: Windows 7, That will do.
Me: You don't even use windows 7
Mum: What do I use?

Lol, that's why I was laughing in the video as she said that. How could you be as dumb as not to know what operating system you use! She's fine about me mocking her though because she knows she's not tech savy ;)

Also in the windows 1.01 video I find it funny how she looks at the screen and says "is it still booting up" and I'm like "no... That's it, that's actually the operating system and what it looks like", "it still looks like its booting up to me" lol ;)

To be honest I don't mind windows 8 running on a tablet infact I'm buying the Microsoft surface with windows 8 pro next year. Still... I would never run windows 8 on my desktop computer!

Same here, Windows 8 Metro is perfect for touch screen but I don't understand why it is the default start screen for desktop users also who use mouse and keyboard?

Well we are now in the post pc era and Microsoft is obviously trying to draw people towards using tablet computers. Make windows 8 bad for desktop users yet really good for tablets and you have successfully made your Microsoft surface more appealing than using a desktop computer with windows 8.

Bring Surface and ask her to test drive it again. I'm sure now when she knows the basics, she will definitely like Windows 8 on a touch screen. :D

Yea I am waiting for the windows 8 pro surface first though so that is a few months away. Still I have heaps of interesting videos to make in the meantime. As you know she tried out windows 1.01 from 1985 so I'll get her to try out Mac system 1 from 1984 and get her to compare the two seeing which she likes better out of those decades old operating systems. I'll ask her if she was living in the 80's which OS would she prefer to use... Windows 1.01 or mac OS system 1?

After that I'll get her to try out Mac OSX snowleapord and compare it to windows 8 to see which she likes better.

Nice story.
Reminds me on my and my wife's way , gone from Dos 4 trough Windows 3.1 /Windows NT 3.5 ->Novell->(OS2)-W95/NT4->(Me)->W98->XP->W2k->(Vista)-W7-(W8)-->OSX () means I personaly dropped them eventualy fully.
Aside from MS$$ BS I tried to introduce Linux and Mac OS to my wife's PC too. She resistid as long as I brought XP to her PC. Later I gave her a Mac Mini equiped with Mac OSX Leopard, she was exited over simple sleek interface; the whole system was simple to use. Since introducing the Mac in our home my wife does not need much instructions. I do the maintenance and migration to newer OS and Mac's. She enjoys on the simple use of OSX until OSX 10.6.8.
These two OS (XP with classic interface and OSX with mostly all animations disabled, no transparencies) are the only fully adopted OS in our home ever. That's with a reason.
We tried out Vista, W7,W8, Lion, Mountain Lion and came to conclusion: they brought changes in user interface / interaction that do not attract us anymore. The makers doing the false assumings. They do prefere the wrong things. User interface plastered with Aero, IOS-gimmicks, tiles, spaces, animations, swipes and so on ... all over . No go.

Why do reviewers often clame elderly poeple where unable to adopt modern OS?
They (reviewers) do ignore the fact that older poeple have more intuition (faculty of judgement) based on knowledge and experience the made in their live. They can immediately divide bullshit from usable stuff without being instructed how to use it before. In best case the OS AND integrated apps (like iLive-suite) for daily use are self-describing, make good proposals and guide the user unobstrusively. (Sorry for my poor English.)
For the future I would prefer a solution allowing the user to choose the apps instead of the OS.
Make apps mostly independent from OS; similar to Crossover or Parallels I'm using on my Mac's already.
Take the app you like without knowing which OS it belongs to.
